Dhaka, July 24, 2026 — Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has stepped down from office, submitting his resignation letter to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Friday, nearly two years before his five-year term was due to end in April 2028.
Why Did Shahabuddin Resign?
The 76-year-old cited serious health complications as the reason for his exit. In a statement released through his press secretary, Shahabuddin said recent medical tests had diagnosed him with Autonomic Neuropathy, a condition that causes him to occasionally lose consciousness for brief periods. Under Bangladesh’s constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed — who cut short a medical trip to Bangkok to return to Dhaka on Friday — will now perform the duties of president until a successor is elected. Parliament is required to elect a new president within 90 days.

Shahabuddin was elected unopposed in April 2023 as the nominee of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party. While the Bangladeshi presidency is largely a ceremonial post — real executive power sits with the prime minister and cabinet — his role took on outsized importance after the student-led uprising of July–August 2024 forced Hasina to flee to India. In the political vacuum that followed, Shahabuddin remained the country’s only continuous constitutional authority while a caretaker government, and later Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s administration, steered the country through elections and reform.

Local reports suggest political pressure played a role alongside health concerns. According to Daily Star sources, intelligence agencies learned that Shahabuddin held a phone call with exiled former PM Sheikh Hasina while he was in London for medical treatment between May 9 and May 18. He was reportedly asked to step down after this came to light — though a senior BNP leader described the situation as “more complex” than a single phone call.
The resignation also comes just months before Hasina’s planned return to Bangladesh in December, leaving her without an ally in a top constitutional office.
